Gordon Chong FAIA - former AIA National President and current board member of the Executive Committee of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture

"The Neuroscience of Architecture"

The mission of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture is to promote and advance knowledge that links neuroscience research to a growing understanding of human responses to the built environment. The Academy benefits from the expanding body of research that has evolved within the neuroscience community in the last two decades, and the promise of even more in the coming century. Some observers have characterized what is happening in neuroscience as the most exciting frontier of human knowledge since the Renaissance. All humanity stands to benefit from this research in countless ways still to be determined. The profession of architecture has become a partner in developing the application of this knowledge base in order to increase its ability to be of service to society.

Gordon H. Chong F.A.I.A was the founder of Chong Partners Architecture, a 200 person architectural, urban design and interior design firm with offices in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego and London. Chong Partners Architecture was acquired by a 7,500 person International Design firm in September 2007.

Founded by Gordon in 1976 as a sole proprietor, over 32 years Chong Partners grew to become recognized as one of the largest firms in the nation. The firm specialized in the design of Health Care, University /Academic, Cultural and Urban in fill projects.

Gordon was born and raised in Hawaii, received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon, a Master of Architecture degree from Edinburgh University, Scotland, and traveled internationally before settling in San Francisco.

In 2002, Gordon served as the National President of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) based in Washington D.C. As National AIA President, Gordon served as the spokesman for the American profession throughout the world and received Medals of Honor from Japan, Korea, Canada, and Mexico for his vision and leadership to enhance the future of the profession. Prior to his national presidency he served as President of the AIA - State of California and of the AIA - San Francisco Chapter.

In addition to his national leadership of the profession, in 2005 Gordon was awarded The Benjamin Latrobe Fellowship, in collaboration with The University of California, Berkeley and Kaiser Permanente to further their research on Evidenced Based Design. The Latrobe Fellowship is the most prestigious research award for the profession and is sponsored by The AIA's College of Fellows.

Gordon served as President of The Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA) from 2007- 2009 and remains on its Board of Directors along with Neuroscientists from the Salk Institute, The Neuroscience Institute, and U.C. San Diego. ANFA is a unique organization working to understand the relationship between brain response, human behavior and design stimuli.

"Sensory Design: Architecture that Activates the Sensorial Body / Brain Processes"

Joy Monice Malnar, AIA is a professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has co-authored The Interior Dimension: A Theoretical Approach to Enclosed Space, and lectured on aspects of sensory design in Montréal, Singapore, Sydney, Seoul and most recently Doha. For four years her main responsibility was the "Sensory Design" section which focused on the review of architecture, landscape architecture and products.

She has also been a National Center for Supercomputing Applications Faculty Fellow for 2000-2002, engaging in collaborative research with CAVE™ technology. She has investigated the use of immersive virtual reality technologies and worked with the NCSA to develop custom programs as a means of aiding the design process. Her professional experience includes employment with such firms as Sargent and Lundy, Whitaker Associates, and Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, where she worked on large commercial projects. During the last few years Malnar has been a member of the "The Last Four Miles" Visioning Committee of the Friends of the Parks as they develop a conceptual plan to facilitate the completion of Chicago's 30 mile lakefront.
